Winston Cup History
In 1987 Ernie started Winston Cup driving for
Marc Reno, followed by D.K. Ulrich. In 88-89 he continued to drive for
Ulrich never finishing inside the top 5. In 1990 Junie Donlavey contracted
Ernie to drive, after 3 races that season Morgan-McClure contracted Ernie
to drive for their #4 Kodak car. This was what Ernie needed. With the new
team and car, Ernie placed his first run inside the top 5, his first pole
and his first Winston Cup win. In 1993 Ernie left Morgan-McClure for Yates
racing, but not without leaving 7 wins, 9 poles, and over a dozen top 5's
in the books for Morgan-McClure racing. Yates contacted Ernie to drive
for him to replace the late Davey Allison. Ernie
has been driving for Yates ever since, both in the #28 and #88 cars. In
1998 Ernie left Yates and starting driving for MB2 Motorsports in the #36
Skittles and M&M sponsored Pontiac. Ernie Retired from auto racing
in 1999.
Ernie made his 300th Winston Cup start on April 18th 1999.
