Started racing go-carts at age 9, but got his start in stock car racing in 1974, with his first stock car win in 1975. In 1977, at age 18, he won the Stockton Championships in a car he and his father (Vic) built. Below is a rare picture of Ernie and his father racing, this is one of Ernie's greatest memories of his late father. Ernie moved to Charlotte, NC taking a job welding together the grandstands at the Charlotte Motorspeedway and working for Ken Schrader.
    Sept. 13, 1987 Ernie ran his first Winston cup race at Richmond (finished 29th). The following year, Ernie was runner-up for the Rookie of the Year award. 
    Ernie drove the Dale Earnhardt Chevrolet #56 owned by Marc Reno (Ernie's current crew chief) for 2 races in 1987.
Ernie drove for D.K. Ulrich in 87-89. One sponsor was Kroger foods
After driving for D.K. Ulrich, Ernie drove for Junie Donlavey for several races, leaving them to join the Morgan-McClure racing team, driving the #4 Kodak car.
