Winston Cup History

Davey's Winston Cup career started in 1985, driving 3 races for Hoss Ellington. Davey managed to drive his car to one top 10 finish that year. In 1986, Davey drove 5 races, one for Junior Johnson and 4 for the Sadler Brothers, again managing to achieve one top 10 finish. In 1987, Davey started driving for Ranier-Lundy (now Robert Yates Racing) behind the wheel of the #28 Texaco Havoline Ford. That year Davey won two races (Talladega and Dover), 5 Poles, and rookie of the Year. What a year for Davey. In 1988 Davey remained on with Ranier Racing (Lundy dropped out). That fall Robert Yates bought the team, cars, and driver. Davey won two more races that year (Michigan and Richmond). He also finished what Davey called his most favorite memory - a close second to his father, Bobbie at Daytona. In '89 he continued to drive for Yates, and took home his 5th and sixth victories (Talladega and Daytona). In 1990, Davey continued his winning steak, taking both Charlotte and Bristol. Davey was edging closer and closer to the cup. In 1991 Davey claimed 5 victories, and led more miles and more races than any other driver that year. 1992 started off rocky for Davey, wrecking his car in practice for the Daytona 500, but he still won the race in his back-up car. With a win under his belt this season, things started to look up for Davey, until Bristol, he crashed hard.  Followed by Pocono, where he smacked the wall hard, his car flipped eleven times! He escaped with a broken right arm and collarbone and a fractured and dislocated wrist. (You can read and see all the detail on this crash here.) Davey, badly broken and bruised had another driver qualify his car for the next race. Davey took the wheel to start the race for points, and ended up winning. That year Davey also buried both his beloved grandfather, and his brother, Clifford, who was killed din a crash at Michigan. While going for the Winston Million, Davey was leading at Darlington, but pitted for fuel just before rain cut the race short, costing Davey the race and the Million. A wreck in the final race at Atlanta likely cost him the Winston Cup title. Davey finished 1992 with yet another 5 victories. Most racing fans thought that 1993 was going to be the year for Davey, he would finally get his cup. Unfortunitly we were all wrong, Davey only won 1 race (out of 19) before July 12 when the helicopter he was piloting crashed at his 'home' track of Talladega. Ironically enough, his favorite hobby next to racing was flying, and Talladega was his the site of his first race, and his first victory. Yates contacted Ernie Irvan to drive for him to replace Davey. Ernie had been driving for Yates ever since, both in the #28 and #88 cars. In 1998 Ernie left Yates and driving for the #36 Skittles car, retiring shortly after..

It has been 5 years since Davey left this world. Amazingly he still holds several race records. We will always remember you Davey! FOREVER A CHAMPION: DAVEY ALLISON, 1961- 93
